As the crypto industry matures and institutional investors enter the space, Coinbase is seeking to evolve alongside it by offering a reliable measurement that accurately portrays the growing size and diversity of the market. Head of institutional products at Coinbase Greg Tusar told Fortune that he hopes the index will become the go-to benchmark for investors. “What we’re trying to do is establish a benchmark that is not specific to any asset, that’s trying to give what is the broad basket of crypto assets doing, the same way that you gauge the performance of the equity markets through the S&P 500,” Tusar said. The index will serve as an investment product as well, only available to eligible traders outside the U.S due to its status as a perpetual future — a type of derivative contract, like call or put options, without a specific expiration date that is not available in the U.S. Investment is not the main goal of the product, Tusar told Fortune. Instead, he envisions it as a reference to help people identify market trends and aid in price discovery, rather than depending solely on Bitcoin, which often doesn’t show the whole picture. “I think Bitcoin is used as that benchmark, simply because there isn’t anything else to put in its place,” Tusar said. The Coin50 provides a more comprehensive view of the market by including Bitcoin and the other top 49 cryptocurrencies weighted by market cap. Tusar said that he believes Bitcoin’s dominance will decrease over time, making it less and less of a useful benchmark and creating the need for a tool like the Coin50. “I think as the crypto economy grows, as crypto fulfills its mission, that will naturally broaden out the number of layer ones, the number of other tokens… and establishing this now sets us up for that future,” Tusar said. The index will rebalance quarterly as market share fluctuates and assets fall out of the top 50. Assets included in the index must satisfy a list of standards that scrutinize each asset based on their token economics, blockchain infrastructure and security. At the moment, the index weighs Bitcoin at 50%, Ethereum at 28%, Solana at 6%, XRP at 3%, Dogecoin at 2%, and the remaining 45 tokens at 11%. Anyone, with or without a Coinbase account, will be able to access this tool in various places including on the Coinbase website and on the Coinbase app. Investors outside the U.S. will be able to access the perpetual futures contracts through the Coinbase Advanced application.

Analysts believe Trump’s embrace of cryptocurrencies during the presidential campaign and his venture into crypto trade is luring investors on the expectation that the new administration would be crypto-friendly. The Trump campaign accepted donations in cryptocurrency and he also appeared at industry events, promising to make the US “the crypto capital of the planet”. In late September, Trump and his three sons – Donald Jr, Eric, and Barron – unveiled his latest entrepreneurial endeavour, World Liberty Financial. Mauvis Ledford, CEO of Sogni AI, a Singapore-based tech startup, says the incoming Trump administration would likely adopt cryptocurrencies to stimulate economic growth. “It’s plausible that Trump’s administration might explore leveraging blockchain technology to enhance transparency and efficiency in government operations, especially with Elon Musk as an adviser. There could also be initiatives aimed at promoting the adoption of cryptocurrencies to stimulate economic growth and attract tech-driven investments,” Ledford, a former CTO of CoinMarketCap, told Al Jazeera. However Ledford remains cautious about just how far Trump might go in his support for cryptocurrencies. “I don’t personally believe anything Trump says, however, and blockchains do allow the creation of rules that everyone must follow, which I don’t think Trump would specifically like in a government he runs,” said Ledford. Ledford too acknowledges the many scams, which he calls “smoke and mirrors”, that have infested parts of the cryptocurrency industry. “The only ‘tokens’ I truly trust are Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin because it was the first creator of blockchain technology, and a simple form of digital gold – literally all it was meant to be,” said Ledford. What does the surge mean for the US economy? NEW YORK (AP) — As money continues to pour into crypto following Donald Trump’s victory last week, bitcoin has climbed to yet another record high. The world’s largest cryptocurrency topped $87,000 for the first time on Monday. As of around 3:45 p.m. ET, bitcoin’s price stood at $87,083, per CoinDesk, up over 28% in the last week alone. That’s part of a rally across cryptocurrencies and crypto-related investments since Trump won the U.S. presidential election last week. Analysts credit much of the recent gains to an anticipated “crypto-friendly” nature of the incoming administration, which could translate into more regulatory clarity but also leeway. Still, as with everything in the volatile cryptoverse, the future is hard to predict. And while some are bullish, others continue to warn of investment risks. Here’s what you need to know. Back up. What is cryptocurrency again? Cryptocurrency has been around for a while now, but has come under the spotlight in recent years. In basic terms, cryptocurrency is digital money. This kind of currency is designed to work through an online network without a central authority — meaning it’s typically not backed by any government or banking institution — and transactions get recorded with technology called a blockchain. Bitcoin is the largest and oldest cryptocurrency, although other assets like Ethereum, Tether and Dogecoin have gained popularity over the years. Some investors see cryptocurrency as a “digital alternative” to traditional money — but it can be very volatile, and reliant on larger market conditions. Why are bitcoin and other crypto assets soaring now? A lot of it has to do with the outcome of last week’s election. Trump was previously a crypto skeptic, but changed his mind and embraced cryptocurrencies during this year’s presidential race. And Trump had previously promised that, if elected, he would remove the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Gary Gensler, who has been leading the U.S. government’s crackdown on the crypto industry and repeatedly called for more oversight. “Crypto rallied as Election Day progressed into the night and as it became increasingly clear that Trump would emerge victorious,” Citi analysts David Glass and Alex Saunders wrote in a Friday research note, pointing to larger industry sentiment around Trump being “crypto-friendly” and a potential shift in regulatory backing. Even before the post-election rally, assets like bitcoin posted notable gains over the past year or so. In this week’s newsletter: Elon Musk and Donald Trump want to create a “Department of Government Efficiency”, crypto wins big across the board, and a modern equivalent of Lysistrata takes hold on TikTok. Thank you for joining me. Trump, president-elect of the US, said he wants to appoint Musk, the world’s richest man, as the country’s “secretary of cost-cutting” to reduce bureaucracy in the federal government by an order of $2tn, roughly a third. Trump announced in September that he would create a “Department of Government Efficiency”. Musk had pushed for the idea and has since relentlessly promoted it, emphasizing the acronym for the agency: Doge, a reference to a meme of an expressive Shiba Inu. Trump said the agency will be conducting a “complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government, and making recommendations for drastic reforms”. In a video posted on X two days after the election, Trump said he would “immediately re-issue my 2020 executive order, restoring the president’s authority to remove rogue bureaucrats”. He wants to “clean out the deep state”. His promises echo his slogan on The Apprentice: “You’re fired!” Project 2025, an influential and controversial blueprint for Trump’s second term, lays out ways to make bureaucrats fireable. Musk has extensive experience slashing corporate spending and he’s promised to cull federal payrolls in much the same way. He cut staff at X, formerly Twitter, by 80% after buying it in 2022, a move he said prevented a $3bn shortfall, but has not otherwise paid off. Revenue is in steep decline and advertisers have absconded, making a comeback seem unlikely. As the CEO of SpaceX, though, he has garnered a reputation for launching rockets more cheaply than competitors by negotiating with suppliers and keeping operations lean. The billionaire does not seem to be under illusions of what will happen after his proposed cuts, admitting that reducing spending “necessarily involves some temporary hardship”. Americans do want to spend less – of their own money. Do they want austerity and less financial assistance from the federal government? Do they want the world’s richest person admonishing them to cut their expenses? Musk has already asked Trump to appoint SpaceX employees to top government positions, the New York Times reports. The president-elect promised to ban bureaucrats from taking jobs at the companies they regulate. Such a rule would seem to bar SpaceX’s lieutenants from the Pentagon’s door. But the president-elect has never shied away from cronyism. The two are not trying to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest: Musk’s role in the government will be structured so that he can maintain control of his companies, the Financial Times reports. In his first term, Trump and his team struggled to fill the thousands of government appointments needed to run the federal government. Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie said the administration never fully recovered from its failure to find those appointees. Perhaps adding Musk to the equation is meant to prevent a repeat of such laggardliness. In an extreme version of the new administration, Trump and Musk simply eliminate any position for which they can’t find a friendly appointee. In John Kennedy Toole’s Pulitzer-winning 1980 novel A Confederacy of Dunces, the idiot hero, tasked with organizing an intractable pile of files at his new job, eradicates the company’s mess. What will stand in Musk’s way, however, is one of his sworn enemies: labor law. Tesla is the only major US carmaker that does not employ a unionized workforce. The billionaire CEO wants to keep it that way. Federal government employees, by contrast, enjoy strong employment protections that would hinder Musk’s slash-and-burn approach to cost-cutting and possibly render it impossible. For all the different companies he runs, Musk has little experience managing public sector employees. He may find them less pliable lions than he is used to taming. In 48 races that saw donations by cryptocurrency’s biggest Pac, Fairshake, every candidate backed by the industry has won, Bloomberg reports. More than 60% of that cash supported Republicans or opposed Democrats, per Bloomberg. The industry placed its biggest bet in Ohio, where Republican Bernie Moreno faced off against popular incumbent Democratic senator Sherrod Brown. Moreno received $40m from cryptocurrency companies. Brown chaired the Senate banking committee and wanted tighter regulation on digital currency. Earlier this year, crypto companies spent $10m to attack Katie Porter, a proponent for more stringent cryptocurrency laws, in the California senate primary. Porter lost. Protect Progress, another pro-crypto Pac, spent $10m each on Senate races in Arizona and Michigan where crypto wasn’t much of an issue. Both its favored candidates had voted in support of the industry on key bills, though. In addition to the long-term benefits of a friendly, less restrictive regulatory environment, the crypto industry has made immediate financial gains. Bitcoin is trading at record highs, breaking $75,000 late Tuesday night. Fairshake did not make a contribution in the presidential race but stands to benefit from its outcome anyway. Trump sells his own cryptocurrency now and supports the industry with his full throat, reversing his position on crypto from his first term. Musk has acted as a hype man for cryptocurrency, particularly Dogecoin, years before it was popular. (Harris neither embraced nor rejected the crypto.) Musk especially seems amenable to one of crypto’s highest priorities – the firing of Gary Gensler, the securities and exchange chair. Coinbase, the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, gave Fairshake $25m. Coinbase’s CEO, Brian Armstrong, wrote the day after the US election: “DC received a clear message that being anti-crypto is a good way to end your career.” He may be right. The industry is second in political contributions only to fossil fuel companies, according to the consumer advocacy non-profit Public Citizen. According to HMRC, there are high rates of non-compliance when it comes to reporting crypto gains. Basic-rate taxpayers now face an increased CGT rate of 18 per cent, up from 10 per cent, following changes announced in the October Budget. Higher and additional rate taxpayers' rates jumped from 20 to 24 per cent. James Carn, an associate director in Private Client Tax at Evelyn Partners, warns: "The tax treatment of crypto assets can be complex." Suzanne Morsfield, policy advisor at trade association CryptoUK, previously spoke out in the wake of the Autumn Statement and said the prospect of Reeves hiking capital gains tax above 28% will hit the some five million crypto holders in Britain particularly hard. “There’s a perception that capital gains tax mostly reaches the upper echelons of society… that it’s a way of making the wealthy shoulder more of the burden,” Morsfield told DL News. “That’s not 100% accurate, especially when it comes to crypto.” Her caution comes after the British tech community warned that a tax hike may drive innovative firms away. The term “decentralized AI” (DeAI) has therefore emerged, suggesting an approach where anyone can contribute, from development to deployment, creating a decentralized alternative to centralized AI companies like OpenAI. However, a standardized definition of decentralized AI still remains absent. Blockchain can support this vision, with crypto playing a critical role in the tokenomics—a topic I’ll discuss further in my upcoming articles. DeAI in 2025: Mere Narrative or True Innovation?
